Wednesday biked out to the Port Hills
In Christchurch looking towards the hills I'm about to bike up
Success! Resting under a tree upon reaching Victoria Park. Super hot day actually.
While in Christchurch you forget how close the ocean is.
I'll try to do a bike tour next week of the inner city and take some pictures of the earthquake destruction. Several blocks in the center of the downtown area are still cordoned off (2 years later; there was a large earthquake Sept 2010, but the one that killed 185 people in Christchurch was Feb 22nd 2011).
There are many cranes in downtown, tearing down buildings that stay upright in the earthquake but are no longer considered safe due to structural damage.
As you go around the city you often run across uneven spots in the concrete- as if there are tree roots (but there are no trees nearby).
One lesson that Group Health may want to consider- after the earthquake people came to Pegasus Health for help, and staff kept running back into the health center building to get supplies, even though the building had not been cleared as safe to enter. They now have a trailer across the parking lot from the main building, filled with medical supplies. If there is another quake, the trailer should be easily accessible.
